About the book >.>.> An exhibition of the present kind is able to avoid problems of attribution to a considerable extent by simply selecting examples of uncontestable excellence. However the need to offer an adequate representation of the varied aspects of the painter’s work does lead us into some questionable areas the most serious of them being that of the compositional studies. Thus cat. nos. 4-9 offer a reasonably consistent notion of Piazzetta’s approach to compositional problems. The two drawings which follow cat. nos. 10 and 11 represent a type of compositional study in pen on white paper which has been assigned to Piazzetta but which now in the light of better information must be assigned to an almost forgotten painter named Pietro Roselli. Apart from this the exhibition does not address itself to the extraordinarily complex and delicate problems presented by the drawings of Piazzetta’s pupils and associates. Detailed studies for paintings by Piazzetta cat. nos. 12-23 are not numerous but they display a manner of handling which is quite distinct from the better-known and more widely distributed presentation drawings. They can often be dated fairly precisely and thus they make some contribution toward the establishment of a satisfactory chronological pattern for the Piazzetta drawings as a whole. (MP)
