About the book >.>.> Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) was the pioneering master of a revolutionary form of naturalism that had a profound and lasting influence upon European art and taste. This book contains annotated lists giving the essential details of pictures painted by Caravaggio and about 140 of his followers from the time of his arrival in Rome until the ebbing of the movement in the middle of the seventeenth century. The painters included range from the little-known to such masters as Georges de La Tour Hendrik Terbrug- ghen Giovan Battista Caracciolo and Caravaggio himself. Many unidentified artists are also included and several new attributions are proposed by the author. The entire work of an artist is listed if he remained more or less consistently Caravaggesque throughout his career; in other cases only that phase of an artist’s work is covered where he can be shown to have come temporarily under Caravaggio’s sway. Several thousand pictures are listed. No book of so comprehensive a character has ever been devoted to this influential chapter in European art and it is no exaggeration to say that the author’s connoisseurship combined with a sovereign knowledge of the source material puts the study of this complex subject on a new and sounder footing. Exhaustive indexes of locations and of iconographical themes make the book easy to consult and 244 illus- trations many of hitherto unpublished un pictures add its value as an indispensable work of reference. to Benedict Nicolson was Editor of The Burlington Magazine for over thirty years.
