About the book >.>.> There may be family associations which give to certain pictures a personal charm. Similarly the subject may be treated in various ways. For example the prints might be dealt with simply as works of art and from this standpoint the exacting critic might not appraise many of them highly. Again there is the arch?ological point of view from which might be surveyed or analysed their merits or demerits as exhibiting accuracy or otherwise in regard to development of hull rigging or other details of equipment. It must be admitted that in some cases the artist has allowed his imagi- nation to obscure historical fact. Something must be allowed for artistic licence. But other factors also should be noticed. For instance in the two Van de Veldes in this collection the engraver has reversed the original paintings thus altering the position of the ships and giving an erroneous impression of the situation. In this volume the plan chosen has been to supply a brief description under each print of what it is believed the painter meant to represent with a running commentary upon the pictures against an historical back- ground.
