About the book >.>.> The courts of the Spanish Hapsburg and Bourbon dynasties enthusiastically collected a wide range of works of art: they invited outstanding painters from throughout Europe and provided them with opportunities to put their talents to good use and also dis patched envoys to various countries to acquire works of art. The Spanish court thus became an internationally oriented scene where diverse currents in art intermingled as well as a powerful driving force that promoted the further development of these currents. Span- ish painters subsequent to the Middle Ages meanwhile were in- spired strongly by these multinational activities of the court in support of the arts. In this way it gradually became possible to dis cuss the distinctive characteristics of Spanish art from the viewpoint of “global styles.” One would be justified in saying that it was these foundations that made possible the golden age of Spanish art that is represented by the court painter Vel?zquez. Based on this historical background the present exhibition aims to introduce the collection of the Prado National Museum and. at the same time to trace the development of Spanish art through its connections with the royal collection. Featured are seventy-seven works by forty-seven artists including such masters as Vel?zquez. Goya El Greco Zurbaran Murillo Titian Tintoretto and Rubens. Through their outstanding aesthetic quality these works will reveal how rich and meaningful the results can be when that which is inter- national in character and that which is rooted in the local historical climate meet and recognize the best in each other. This long-awaited exhibition is the first time that the collection of the Prado National Museum is being introduced in Japan on such a major scale. We sincerely hope that it will prove to be a profoundly moving experience for a large number of Japanese people and that it will provide an opportunity for them to become more closely ac quainted with the Prado National Museum.
