About the book >.>.> Richard Ormond joined the staff of the National Portrait Gallery in 1965 and he has been at work on the present catalogue since that time. This forms one of a series which will eventually cover the entire collection; a catalogue of the Tudor and Jacobean Portraits has been published and one for the early Georgian period is in the press. The Early I ictorian catalogue includes over five hundred sitters active between the years 1830-1860. The thousand or so portraits owned by the Gallery are catalogued in detail with extensive documentation and a discussion of all the major issues and problems connected with them. In addition the catalogue attempts to list and classify all known images of every sitter and reproduces a considerable number of portraits in other collections. In this way the scope of the catalogue is vastly increased for it is not only a catalogue raisonn? of works owned by the Gallery but a vast index to the portraiture of every major figure of the period. Roughly three hundred portraits of Queen Victoria for example are listed chronologically and twenty- five of them are reproduced. The catalogue covers almost entirely new ground and it contains a vast corpus of information on the portraits and personalities of the early Victorian age. It will be of incomparable value to anyone interested in nineteenth century history and art. (OS)
