About the book >.>.> It is paradoxical how professions advocating for the arts as primary ways of knowing and serving society have disconnected from their epistemological base and have not widely adopted artistic enquiry to research what art does. This is no doubt a result of how the present era tends to view research exclu- sively as science often unaware of the long-standing philosophical examina- tion of different ways of knowing that include the arts. This book hopes to challenge and motivate artist researchers to fire up their base. Art is a way of knowing problem solving healing and transfor- mation that we marginalize if we do not embrace it as a vehicle of research. There is a striking disconnect when people and professions understanding the unique resources of the arts in addressing problems and issues inacces- sible to verbal analysis nevertheless persist in the use of the latter as an exclu- sive foundation of research. Art-based research has emerged as an approach to enquiry primarily through the applied arts fields of the arts in therapy and education where there are thousands of artists involved in adapting creative expression and artistic knowing to professional practice. Faced with the need to become involved in research these artists often question the gap that exists between artistic knowing in their personal and professional lives and current academic definitions of research. They ask why not use my art as research since this is what brought me to this work in the first place? (LL)
