Published by Wessex Associated News Ltd from their offices at 33 Westgate Street the Chronicle prided itself on never missing a single issue throughout the entire war despite bomb damage to the printing works and editorial offices that put the Westgate Street premises out of action for the best part of a month following the blitz. Newspapers in wartime Britain were an important part of the people’s daily lives. According to the government’s Wartime Social Survey four in five men and two in three women saw a newspaper on any one day during the war. The year 1943 saw newspaper consumption in Britain reach a wartime high with more copies bought per head of population than before the war. Not only did they provide a detailed digest of news upon which people could reflect and form an opinion newspapers also entertained with advertisements cartoons and puzzles. But despite the rush to produce a newspaper and get it on to the news stands once read they were still are – discarded more quickly than almost any other product. and The popular belief that “I read it in the paper therefore it must be true’ became even less credible during the war years when official censorship of news stories and photographs was rife.
