About the book >.>.> Many sources to reconstruct that history including interviews with the pottery workers and their relatives in the 1970s records of more than a thousand pots and documentary research and excavated pottery from both the kilns and the surrounding area. The book follows an industry that started on the heathlands of east Dorset in medieval times and continued to produce humble everyday earthenwares until the last kiln closed. All seven kilns that survived into the twentieth century were still using traditional woodfiring techniques and were in Verwood but previously there had been kilns over a much wider area spreading into several parishes. The potteries were always involved with the local woodland industries which supplied the fuel for firing the kilns. The industry peaked in the mid-eighteenth century when it grew to seventeen separate firms. The pottery was then run along the same lines as most rural kilns making a wide range of pots. However with the spread of Staffordshire finewares from 1800 the number of kilns declined and Verwood reduced its range of pots to making jugs kitchen and dairy wares and costrels. (SP)
