About the book >.>.> French furniture has long been admired in England but our knowledge and appreciation of it has often seemed to stop short at the Louis Seize period. Today however there is a growing admiration for furniture made at the time of Napoleon Bonaparte of which this is the first serious study to appear in English. The French Empire style had a pro-found influence on the furniture pro-duced throughout Europe and in the Americas for at least the first four decades of the nineteenth century. In England it affected the design of much furniture of the Regency period. Serge Grandjean-Conservateur at the Louvre specialist in furniture and metalwork already well known for studies of works of art in the Empire style is particularly well qualified to write this study of Empire furniture. He draws attention not only to the superb quality of the furniture in the grand manner but also to the charm of the more intimate pieces designed for private apartments.
