About the book >.>.> I have for some time past toy’d with the idea that I would like to recond for any who may be minded to read the same our children I would hope and maybe our grandchildren both here and in Australia for it was during those long leisurely days lounging in the sunshine on the deck of the liner R.M.S. Britanis the “White Lady.on that wonderful voyage to Australia during the months we were there and then again.co the return journey those beautiful days spent sailing across the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans that I started to write the story of my life. A quite ordinary life perhaps but to me very wonderful. God has been good to me and mine. Also I felt it would be of interest. I get great pleasure in recalling what I through the years have gleaned (for I have only picked up the fallen ears) from history and hear-say fact and fiction folklore and legend of the bygones of my native village and parish of Broadwindsor-cum-Burstock. Although I have always felt that I belonged to Broadwindsor I was born at Hursey in the adjoining parish of Burstock and as this is ecclesiastically one with Broadwindsor I like to claim citizenship of both cities. As the map shows the parish of Broadwindsor almost surrounds little Burstock. Broadwindsor as I remember it in my early school days was a warm friendly family sort of place where I went to school on week days Sunday school on Sundays and a place where I could buy sweets when I was given a penny. We all knew each other and grew up to rely on each other we needed each other. The village was practically self-supporting then. The butcher bought our fattened animals we bought our meat from him we supplied the baker with faggots of wood to fire his oven and he supplied us with our daily bread. The blacksmith shod our horses and the wheelwright made our farm waggon they mended our tools and farm implements a broken knife at mowing time or a broken shaft in the harvest field was a major disaster of course we needed each other. We laughed and played together we shared each other’s joys and sorrows. (SP)
