About the book >.>.> It is very gratifying to be called upon for a preface to a second edition of this book especially as it happens to be of a more or less technical nature. When it was first published interest in the arts and crafts particularly crafts as educational factors was slowly beginning to revive after a period of submersion under the more important subjects: reading writing arithmetic and science. As an art man I had naturally a lively faith in the artistic crafts as a means whereby to educate the child born with creative and ?sthetic instincts urgently demanding expression. I was convinced that hand and brain together were more effective in developing thought skill self-reliance and character than was the brain when called upon to function separately. I may have been a little premature in stating my convictions for the book was somewhat slow in finding a public. But I confess to a certain pride when I find to-day that practically every scheme of education which pretends to be at all comprehensive includes some instruction in art and crafts. Doubtless this has had something to do with the increased demands which have been made for this book of late creating the need for a new edition. How far the volume itself has assisted in creating the demand it would be impossible to say but I am egotistic enough to believe that it has contributed. (SP)
