About the book >.>.> Originally dictionaries of quotations were intended to answer the question ‘Who said that?. Today a question which is more frequently asked is ‘What has been said about this?. This perhaps reflects a modern society with a much more varied cultural and educational experience where quotations are not restricted to an established literary and political background and spring from a bewildering variety of media. The Oxford Dictionary of Thematic Quotations sets out to offer some lively and diverse answers to today’s question. The dictionary is arranged by themes ranging from traditional ones such as Chance and Courage to more recent topics such as Genetic Engineering and The Internet. While some major themes on which a great deal has been said such as Love and Death are inevitably large wherever possible more specific themes have been chosen. Thus there are separate but related themes for Journalism News. Newspapers and Press Photographers. Cross-references lead the reader to such related themes so that for example Warfare links to The Army Weapons and individual wars such as the Gulf War or World War II while World War II leads on to Genocide. Elsewhere quotations about people such as Poets are brought together. while a few characters such as Ronald Reagan and Diana Princess of Wales who have attracted a great deal of comment form the subject of separate themes.
