About the book >.>.> He had imagined a stranger plodding resolutely behind him in the street turn- ing where he turned stopping if he stopped. Or a man facing him across the compartment in a train and peering through a hole in his newspaper. Yet during his two weeks in London though he had felt himself under observation it seemed to be erratic almost perfunctory. The flat lent to him in a quiet street near Cadogan Square was entered while he was out but he might never have known it if he had not found the cat in his bedroom instead of the sitting-room in which he had shut her. The careful examination he gave to the place then revealed that a search had been made but with such skill such tender respect for the arrangement of his possessions that only his extraordinary memory made him certain of it. The sole occasion on which he knew he was shadowed was during his visit to a travel agency to book his passage. Then the middle-aged woman who entered as he left was a little too unconscious of their meeting in the doorway a little too concerned with the dog she led so that he went back afterwards to ask the clerk behind the counter about her.
