About the book >.>.> On occasion I would be ‘asked to tea’ at Woodside and Antony and I would sit at the nursery table while Mrs. Scaw and Antony’s brothers and sister would join us. There was a good deal of a process called by all of them ‘ragging’ in which Antony’s mother was a ring- leader. Antony suffered it without ill-humour even it seems to me now with a certain dignity. We might be brought into the nursery to find only bread-and-butter on the table and the older children who were privy to the joke would act and talk as though they had noticed nothing unusual. I of course would be fighting back tears of disappointment but Antony would scarcely notice thus spoiling the fun and causing the good things the cakes and jams to be brought from their hiding-places earlier than was intended. As a guest I was given a dis- pensation from what followed. ‘Poor old Antony! He thought there was going to be no jam!’ ‘Had you on toast that time Antony!’ Antony would smile quite easily but with a touch of incomprehension which would have been thought cynical if he had been older.
