About the book >.>.> IT ALL BEGAN IN AUGUST 1961 when the first issue of THE FANTASTIC FOUR appeared on the newsstands. There had been comics before but no one had ever seen comic such as this. It featured heroes who weren’t squeaky clean who didn’t have secret identities and who actually fought amongst themselves – just like real people. The comics readers of the day realized that something special was happening. And they wanted more. More was quickly provided thanks to the endlessly creative imaginations of Stan Lee Jack Kirby Steve Ditko and others who collec- tively and affectionately became known as the Mighty Marvel Bullpen. They brought to life an unbelievable array of heroes-Spider-Man Thor Hulk Daredevil Iron Man and the X-Men to name but a few. But these were not traditional heroes who always knew the right thing to do and did it. These were characters who spoke thought and acted like ordinary people albeit people who were blessed-or cursed-with ex- traordinary powers. Their adventures weren’t neatly tied up at the end of an issue. As in real life their actions could have long-range con- sequences. And some were hated and feared simply because they were different. But what really held everything together was the fact that Marvel was a fully realized universe-a world that was wholly con- sistent in which its many characters could ex- ist and interact.
