About the book >.>.> From the opening paragraph which introduces the author’s grandfather who ‘died of a clump of iris stylosa’ it is evident that Merry Hall is no ordinary gardening book. And though there are flowers and stories of flowers on all its pages it has the excitement of a novel telling as it does the story of the rescue of a deserted garden and its transformation after many struggles into a little paradise. How far is it a true story? The author had best answer that question for himself: ‘Merry Hall is a real house “Merry Hall” is its proper name and the stories of the garden and the dramas it has witnessed are as I have described them though as a fond father I may at times have dabbed a little paint on one of the lilies or heightened the flush on the cheek of a rambling rose. As for the characters Oldfield the old gardener and Gaskin the factotum are very real indeed and I hope they will not mind the pictures I have drawn of them. The others have been fitted with the customary disguises em- ployed by authors who are acquainted with the laws of libel. (SP)
