About the book >.>.> 50 YEARS OF THE WAGNER ASSOCIATION A new and powerful sound filled the concert hall of Felix Meritis on 26 January 1884: for the first time the great Elisabeth aria from Tannh?user” sung by Marianne Brandt sounded in that hall. On 12 and 14 April 1934 the voice of Maria M?ller carried this same aria through the space of the Stadsschouwburg. Then as a fragment and as the first expression of a militant artistry now in the organic context of a complete Tannh?user” performance and as confirmation of a cultural heritage that has its place in history. Half a century lies between these two milestones. Founded in a time of spiritual and social ferment the Wagner Association after 50 years is once again on the other side of a civilization. Although of a different order the tension of today is no less great than the struggle of then. Struggle was the watchword of 1880. Expression of new life in art and society. The spirit of the “eighties” broke through the mustiness that had nipped every intellectual movement in the bud. Kloos and Verwey wrote their rebellious verses van der Goes Tak and Treub tried to renew political life. Would only Verhulst’s conservative dictatorship remain untouched? The constellation for Wagner was favourable. Overwhelmed by the power and wealth of this new art a number of music lovers had returned from Bayreuth united with a few kindred spirits and decided in the late summer of 1883 to make attempts to introduce Wagner’s art in the Netherlands as well. These attempts were so successful that the Wagner Association was founded shortly afterwards and on 26 January 1884 the new institution could begin its activities. The programme of the first concert entirely devoted to Wagner was a declaration of principle that testified to as much courage as insight. Initially the The founders experienced resistance scorn and ridicule. And not only from the Verhulstians. Wagner became an object of contention par excellence a focus of discussions in the most diverse circles. But his following was also fierce and his admirers numerous. All “octogenarians” were filled if not with his work then most certainly with his ideas. Wagner’s influence in our country has been noticeable and traced for over 20 years. One need only read Diepenbrock’s articles (collected in his Onimegangen”) and Verwey who visited Diepenbrock and Derkinderen in Den Bosch in 1891 tells of the passionate conversations that were constantly held about Wagner. This was the time that Derkinderen designed his murals for the Town Hall of Den Bosch in the Brabant capital which Bu anniversary of the association Jometry yo feel the effe Cold” CAUTION AFFECT wi “New duong n (OS)
