About the book >.>.> THIS book is an anthology of praises of the Flower compiled from works by poets gardeners philosophers and in one case at least a saint St. John of the Cross. But not only are we given descriptions and praises of the Flower; we are told also how to make use of “the virtues that lie within the compass of green mantles”. There are recipes some as early as the fourteenth century others Elizabethan Jacobean Carolean all of a singular beauty and freshness for making rose-water rose-honey violet-honey violet-syrup. There are exquisite recipes for “gilliflowers”. Many of these recipes have never been printed before but have been copied from manuscripts in the British Museum. Others are known in the exquisite works of Miss Eleanour Sinclair Rohde that Christopher Columbus of the garden world now sadly lost to us; but these latter have again been copied from works in the British Museum. There are excerpts from books by Lord Burleigh’s gardener John Gerard Charles the First’s gardener Louis the Four- teenth’s gardener; and there are many poems by Shakespeare Chaucer Spenser Herrick and other masters by whose art the flowers of seasons long since sped bloom on for us for ever.
