About the book >.>.> The first evidence to suggest this was discovered by an invalidish reclusive man born in Torquay Townsend Hall. A keen amateur geologist and archaeologist he was exploring Baggy in 1863 in search of geological specimens when he came across a collection of worked flints – 366 in all. In 1920 Dr Thomas Young of Woolacombe began a search of the area which produced a range of flint tools and tips for weapons – knives scrapers arrow heads borers and so on. Perfect specimens of flint arrowheads have often been turned up by the plough on farmland on Baggy which in mesolithic times when much of the North Atlantic was still clenched up in ice resulting in considerably lower sea levels than those of today could have been approached from the west over dry land. Other places such as Spreacombe Saunton Down Woolacombe and Mortehoe have also yielded artefacts dated to this period and collections of them are to be seen not only in the Museum of North Devon in Barnstaple.
