About the book >.>.> Mineral resources have been exploited on Exmoor for thousands of years and much of what we know about these industries is derived from historical records from the 19th century. Exmoor was a source of silver lead and copper at least as far back as the medieval period whilst lime and slate have been produced in more recent centuries. All have left their mark but iron ore was the most extensively exploited and was mined on a very large scale in the Brendon Hills in the 19th century. This guide will focus on the production of iron before the Industrial Revolution; it will examine the span of time from the prehistoric to the medieval period. The evidence for this industry is almost entirely archaeological and takes the form of mine workings and deposits of iron smelting waste. These remains are still recognizable in many places across Exmoor and the Brendon Hills. Although sometimes subtle and unprepossessing these sites form an integral part of the story of mineral exploitation in south-west England historically one of the world’s greatest mining provinces in which the production of metals has been a major influence on cultural development.
