About the book >.>.> When in 1983/84 I first faced up to the task of deter- mining the coverage internal structure and in- dividual headings for Macmillan’s 34-volume Dictionary of Art which was to embrace the art and architecture of the entire world I looked forward to the opportunity provided by the scale of this endeavour to set up or stimulate new resonances between various highly specialized areas of art- historical interest. I was particularly encouraged and inspired by two seminal works published at that time: Simon Jervis’s Penguin Dictionary of Design and Designers (1984) which explored the intimate links between the history of design and that of art and architecture; and Jessica Rawson’s exhibition catalogue Chinese Ornament The Lotus and the Dragon (British Museum London 1984) which demonstrated how the Greek acanthus and other classical ornaments were reinterpreted in Buddhist temples of Central Asia taken to China and elabo- rated with lotus and peony heads to frame animal ornament until following the Mongol conquests these designs were brought back to the West and rein- tegrated into the art of Islam and Ottoman Turkey.
