About the book >.>.> Would at the fame time flow from the genuine dictates of my own judgement. But my Lord I forbear on two accounts. Your Grace’s reputation has been too well e?tabli?hed by the pre- cepts you have delivered in the duties of your profeffion and enforced in the practice of your life to be augmented by the feeble prai?e of my pen. And fecondly by thofe parts of the world who deny the virtues becau?e they envy the fituations of the Great who have but a mean opinion of the independence because they contemn the profeffion of an author I might be accu?ed of adulation while I fancied my?elf only celebrating the praifes of exalted merit. Dedications are too often a tribute paid to accidental friend?hip coincidence of political opinion or mercenary expectation. No fuch incentives influence me in the choice of a Protector. The first I have no pretenfions to deferve and too much confcioufuefs of inequality to claim. The fubject on which I write and my reluctance to become an Author would confute the imputation of the laft-mentioned motive even in the judgements of those who are ignorant of any other reafon for its not exifting. What my political opinions are is a matter of too little importance to obtrude upon your Grace; but it is fufficient for my pre?ent purpo?e to ob- ferve that I claim the privilege of an Englishman and hold myfelf accountable for them to no man. I dedicate my Lord to virtue and to virtue only. (OS)
