About the book >.>.> A Manual of Anglo-Catholic Devotion began as an attempt to mark one of the great milestones of the Christian pilgrimage the great Jubilee Year 2000 and the dawning of the third millennium. At first it was intended that the manual might reflect the new and more settled stage of liturgical development marked by the Church of England’s Common Worship. As the project developed it became clear that too much remains uncertain. To give an example it would be a bold person who would guess what wording of the Lord’s Prayer will be dominant in England in thirty years’ time. Since so much remains uncertain about how liturgies will develop A Manual of Anglo-Catholic Devotion is content to be true to itself and does not pretend to mark any definitive stage in the history of liturgy. It sees wisdom in the language policy of the Church of England back in the 1990s which allowed historical texts in ‘exclusive’ language to remain intact but required new texts to be in ‘inclusive’ language with regard to human beings. Accordingly some prayers in this manual though by no means all are in the traditional English in which they were written. (SP)
