On departure the passengers had to put up with the captain gend which did not prioritise the needs of the passengers as there was a person on board with a lady end at Minehead They struck shoals scar Minehead abandoned ship and Ginnadrake witnessed some of the soldiers drowning” He recorded that the drowned soldiers were buried in a west Somerset parish and of course each and every fictional event detailed could well have been ‘true’ as the reading of this chapter has shown. However this chapter shows that in relation to the actual (recorded) experience of the sea passage in the Bristol Channel involving the Somerset coast truth may not have been’ stranger than fiction. The facts as they have been recorded and related in the chapter have in many cases been at least as dramatic as fiction. (SP)
