About the book >.>.> During the last hundred years many changes have taken place in the rural life of England. About the middle of the nineteenth century the railways came and many a village that had slept peace- fully since the time of Elizabeth or even before was galvanised into life. But this was only the beginning. Fifty years later the motor engine made its appearance and after much experimentation it has progressed so far towards perfection that with its many uses and abuses it has come now in 1950 to dominate completely the country scene. It may be said with truth that this revolution in transport by taking country people to town and townspeople to the country has been instrumental in bringing about a uniformity that has changed superficially at least the face of Britain. I say superficially because in dress and manners we have become so much alike that it is no longer possible to differentiate in a crowd between townspeople and countrypeople. And what of speech? Even that is changing and becoming uniformly americanised although in the more remote country districts the dialects are slow to die. And a good thing too! Long may they live with their Anglo-Saxon origins and their rich and colourful idioms. I am thinking more particularly of course of the Devonshire dialect so familiar to many of us so reminiscent of dear kindly folk of the past so full of sweet memories of our Devon villages. It is because Lapford has meant so much to me and in the hope that others may get to know it too that I have penned the following pages of this book. (LL)
