About the book >.>.> The bravery of the services was recognised by the award of 197 George Medals and a large number of Kings Commendations for Brave Conduct. The purpose of this guide is briefly to describe and identify the insignia and uniforms of these services and their role in the period 1935-1945. It concentrates on the ARP later CD services which had no pre-war equivalents and which were disbanded at the end of the conflict. It does not cover the pre-war emergency services which were expanded to meet the increased war-time needs although in the definitions of the time they were part of the Civil Defence structure. It also excludes details of the Womens Voluntary Services (WVS) whose original role of encouraging women to take part in ARP activities was expanded out of all recognition. It is hoped to cover this service in a separate pamphlet.
