About the book >.>.> The young house agent who bore the reputation of being the most enterprising in the whole town himself conducted them to Bellingham House; partly because he was most anxious to dispose of the property which had been on his books for a long time and partly because he believed that what counted most in business deals was ‘the personal touch’. He had made himself most affable talking all the way there; such a well- spoken gentleman. When they had arrived he said to them “It’s better for you to look round the place by yourselves Mrs. Smedhurst you can talk so much more freely. I’ll stay down here in the hall.” It was a lovely October morning and Belling- ham House wore none of the forlorn aspect that most houses untenanted for a long period mani- fest. Of course as Mr. Smedhurst said it was a little dusty but that would soon clean up. And as the crisp autumn sunshine poured in at the windows it seemed though empty of furniture to have quite a ‘lived-in’ look. That was what most attracted Mrs. Smedhurst about it a kind of living brightness But both husband and wife had taken a fancy to the place from the very opening of the front door. (LL)
