About the book >.>.> We published The Book of Burford in 1983 produced to a publisher’s formula. More than twenty years on we are offering another book to the town. It is a different book from our earlier volume. The interests and perspectives of local history are always changing and widening and much new material has come into our hands. Some readers will point out what we have not included. That is inevitable and no one. is more aware of our omissions than we are. Some will complain that the pages are not studded with footnotes and references. To do so as Professor Cunliffe wrote in his book on Bath ‘might give the book a more scholarly appearance but would make it very tiresome to read. A general history of this type is written with the reader’s interest in mind and will contain illustrations and personal stories but will also necessarily omit much detail. Some years back we projected the writing of a new history of Burford for the Millennium and sketched out then a work which it became very clear. (LL)
