About the book >.>.> In this Internet age the world is awash with information and knowledge. The vast volume of facts figures projections and predictions that are available at the touch of a keyboard is truly amazing. Knowledge appears to be the key to everything. But is it? Is knowledge the same as wisdom? That is not the view found throughout the Bible. Knowledge and right judgment or wisdom are viewed as separate entities; as any concordance will reveal. Wisdom as distinct from knowledge is seen as so fundamentally important that there is even a deutero-canonical book of the Bible dedicated to it. Wisdom is the ability to use knowledge prudently drawing on common sense and experience. The ‘wisdom’ gathered together here in the form of persons and useful quotations is a distinctly different collection from anything available on the Internet or elsewhere. This compilation began many years ago when as a student I was learning the art of public speaking. I started a small collection of useful sayings and inspiring quotations arranged thematically in a simple school exercise book. They totalled no more than a hundred and included not just quotations from famous Christians but also quotations that I could use in public speaking to draw out or illustrate a point. That modest interest and pastoral aid was the origin and basis of the present compilation. The approach has remained practical and pastoral. Given the source and historico-cultural context of a few of the quotations they cannot all be considered Christian but they are sayings that a Christian speaker or writer may find wise use for. (SP)
