About the book >.>.> Adam Elsheimer is one of the unsung heroes in the history of Western European art. Although his work is well known among specialist circles it remains unjus- tifiably obscure to a wider public. This exhibition seeks to right that wrong. Elsheimer transformed every genre he touched – narrative landscape and the depic- tion of interiors-and he played a crucial part in the creative development of three of the most important artists of the seventeenth century: Rubens Rembrandt and Claude Lorrain. As we undertake this rediscovery. the wise observation of the foremost Elsheimer scholar of recent times should be remembered: Each age created a new Elsheimer for itself and it is time for a closer look at the work in order to discover whether the accretions can beremoved and the real essential artist revealed. With these words Keith Andrews the distinguished Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the National Gallery of Scotland from 1958 to 1985 opened his ground- breaking 1977 monograph on Adam Elsheimer. The most important Elsheimer scholar of his day Andrews set out to review the artist’s oeuvre and to identify the hand of the painter so highly prized by his own con- temporaries. In the first monograph by Heinrich Weizs?cker published in 1938 about sixty works were attributed to Elsheimer. By 1966 when the first Elsheimer exhibition was organised in Frankfurt by Ernst Holzinger-the director of the Stadel at the time this number had been substantially reduced. (MP)
