About the book >.>.> EVIDENCE OF THE EARLY PRESENCE of mankind in the Addington area is provided by a variety of relics dating from the Paleolithic Neolithic Iron and Bronze Ages which were all found within the boundaries of this ancient parish. Ground on either side of Shirley Church Road now occupied by the Addington Golf Club was once known as Addington Common and a reference to the existence of 25 tumuli or ancient burial mounds was included in a book on land tenures written in 1679.1 Pieces of urn or crock were said to have been found in one of them and to have been shown to the historian Nathaniel Salmon author of a work called A History of the Antiquities of Surrey published in 1736. It is generally believed that most of them were destroyed in 1914 when the golf course was laid out but in 1916 a sighting of two of them was reported to the Croydon Natural History and Scientific Society. One was situated on ‘Kitchen Hill’ which overlooked the site of an old manor house that stood about half-a-mile to the east of the present Addington Palace. The Bronze Age relics were found when the golf course was made and these together with other material from the same period discovered on the Monks Orchard estate in 1855. (LL)
