The arctures in various European cities aid have to be combed to file the blanks in our knowledge of De Vries Carer and it was necessary to conduct a scientific Evestigations of des idingstrane scemingly slapdash style. It had long been suspected that De Vries’s life and had not yet been laid bare in the archives particularly in Italy and the Czech Republic and this was merely reinforced by Rosemarie Mule shy’s discoveries regarding De Vries’s activity in Pompeo Leoni’s workshop in Milan Arjan de Koomen (Amsterdam) accordingly travelled to Prague (1995) and Turin (1907) to search for traces of De Vries. This yielded some fasci nating material that sheds new light on his activities as court sculpter to Emperor Rudolf and Duke Carlo Emanuele of Savoy as well as answering several specific questions conEED- ing the imperial bronze foundry in Prague Much of this intor ration is incorporated in my introductory essay. It is supple. mented by the detailed picture that Rosemarie Mulcahy gives of De Vries’s work in Milan which is backed with documentary material. Paula van der Heiden was successful in a briefer exam- nation of the Hague archives but Emile van Binnebeke had less luck in his attempt to find evidence of a connection between De Vries and Willem van Tetrode. The transcriptions of all new relevant documents are included at the end of this catalogue Unfortunately it was not possible to examine the tich archives in Florence but it is to be expected that the Medici Archive Project headed by Dr Edward Goldberg will yield new material Adriaen de Vries’s Florentine years in the near future.
