About the book >.>.> On 4 June 2005 a substantial audience gathered in the Powell Theatre of Sherborne School for a day-conference in honour of the 1300th anniversary of both the foundation of the see of Sherborne in 705 and the start of the episcopal career of its first bishop St Aldhelm. Most of the chapters of this volume were first delivered as lectures on that memorable occasion which took stock of the progress made by modern scholars in making the ideas and the writings of Aldhelm that erudite noble and learned cleric – accessible to a modern audience. It is an honour that my pleasant task as chairman on that occasion is here converted into the more testing duty of setting these papers on the work of Aldhelm and the foundation of the see of Sherborne in the wider context of his career and his world.
