About the book >.>.> With the organization in running order the Volunteers went out in pairs with a Dutch interpreter to make a house to house survey of needs. As in Rotterdam City all wooden articles had long ago been used for fuel. For eight months there had been no coal no gas no electricity-and no soap or cleaning materials for two years. Nobody had any clothes except those they were wearing and there was urgent need for drugs and chemicals with which to fight scabies and vermin. A report on each household and family visited was taken back to the committee office; needs were then covered by co-operation between Teams or passed on to appropriate authorities. Leaders of the Dutch and British Teams daily met the British military authorities’ Civil Affairs representative to report and put forward requests. It was said that whether the request was for safety-pins for babies’ nappies or equip- ment by the ton somehow in some measure Civil Affairs produced the goods. Thus by friendly co-operation a small number of people got through a great deal of work. The Queen’s Messenger kitchen supplied CS/3 which took soup etc. three times daily to those too enfeebled to leave their homes. Suspect T.B. cases reported by the Dutch nurse were taken to hospital (SP)
