About the book >.>.> An urge for self- expression and an eye for beauty quilts and quiltmaking have been a major form of commu- nication and expression for American women and an important part of this country’s cultural landscape since the early 1800s. Quilts are emblems of hope infused with a host of meanings- some broad national and patriotic; others subtle familial and personal. They are also one of America’s major art forms. Quilts are banners of self-realization and individual creativity and the best quilts are significant works of visual art-objects of great beauty and expressive power. Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries quilts and quiltmaking afforded American women an outlet for artistic expression when few others were available. For all intents and purposes the academy the world of “fine” art was a male-defined and male- dominated enclave largely closed to women until at least the 1960s. It has long disparaged and questioned the value of handcrafts especially those made by women. (OS)
