About the book >.>.> It is a privilege to have been asked to write this introduction to Colin Buchanan’s An Evangelical Among the Anglican Liturgists (Alcuin Club Collections 84). Indeed it is also a particular pleasure because Colin (and I shall keep to the informality in what follows) has had a major influence on my life as he has had on so many lives. My own association with him began when I joined St John’s College Nottingham to train for ordination and to research the place of the eucharist in evangelical thought and practice under his supervision. Up to that point no one in my evangelical formation as a Christian had taught me about the Lord’s Supper or told me to expect ‘a personal interview with the Lord’ as a great evangelical leader of an earlier generation exhorted his readers to do. So I had supposed that my own experience of meeting the risen Christ in the breaking of the bread was somehow contrary to evangelical identity even though I knew it to be thoroughly scriptural and full of the gospel. Colin though opened my eyes to a rich sacramental vein in evangelical history and theology from the Reformers onwards that tells of a deep compatibility between evangelical and eucharistic life. Furthermore he opened – quite literally – the doors of a large Narnia type wardrobe in his study to the world of Anglican liturgy. (LL)
