About the book >.>.> The following pages contain classified descriptions and illustrations of secular plate. In Part I the chronological section a number of examples of secular plate are illustrated and described in order of date; these will be very briefly referred to in such of the following chapters as deal with the class of objects to which they respectively belong. In the same way many pieces of plate of a secular description not originally intended for ecclesiastical use but dedicated to the Church at some time subsequent to their manufacture that are illustrated and described in Part II will be found mentioned shortly in connexion with similar examples of secular plate illustrated and described in this part. There is one large class of objects sroons which has not been discussed. except incidentally in either of the preceding parts: the consideration of these interesting articles necessary alike for both ecclesiastical and domestic purposes has been deferred because the spoon being an article sui generis the description of its various forms in chronological order along with other articles of plate would have hindered rather than helped the progress of this work. Then again there is no indisputable evidence to prove that spoons used in our churches differed in form at any time from ordinary domestic spoons of contemporary manufacture. For these reasons the following chapter on the spoon and its history has been postponed to this part of the work in which it is given the first place. After tracing the history of the spoon and illustrating its various forms the next object for our consideration will be THE SALT OF SALT CELLAR which in the Middle Ages and down to the seventeenth century was the most important article of plate in every nobleman’s house.
