About the book >.>.> At a Classic Car Club dinner in the late 1990s my ‘previous life’ as a police officer came out in the conversation and I was asked if I liked the television programme Heartbeat. In jest my reply was “That was me!” My wife Gill hastily reminded me that I was no Nick Berry! As the conversation continued with my reminiscing about the policing environment the lady who had asked whether I liked Heartbeat went on to pose the question “Why don’t you write a book?” This is my response. The idea as to how I wanted the book to be set out gelled quickly and I started this work then at the turn of the millennium. With my taking on a Branch volunteer role with the National Associatioff of Retired Police Officers (NARPO) the book took third place to other writing so has had a long gestation. What follows is one man’s recollections of his personal involvement in a Service which despite all the frequent criticisms remains the envy of many other Countries. Nothing is perfect certainly not the British Bobby or the organisational infrastructure within which he or she works. The Police Service in Great Britain being made up of human beings inevitably has its failings. The most notable of these probably being its inability to adequately present its real worth. All that said it remains noticeable that there remains no reluctance on the part of police services in other parts of the world to acknowledge the long established expertise of the British Police Service. That this is often referred to as Scotland Yard is a minor annoyance to the other Forces throughout the country. (SP)
