About the book >.>.> He established his credentials as a resident alien by enrolling in the National Union of Seamen but service in the RAF remained his aim. Again the recruiting office turned him away although more politely than in Ceylon. Lassen and the RAF might have been ill-matched. A ground-staff posting would have been unendurable for someone burning to strike a personal blow at the Germans but the requirement of secondary mathematics ruled him out of consideration for aircrew. His maths were weak for the same reason many of his school subjects were not up to scratch. “He absorbed very little of his schooling. It didn’t interest him” says Prince Georg. “He should have been a poacher. There was not a lot he didn’t know about the behaviour of animals wild or domestic.” Lassen’s younger brother Frants amplifies that verdict: “He was very good at physical training as well as at nature studies. He was also keenly interested in history – but miserable and bored by mathematics by both German and English grammar and he hated writing essays.” In short Anders Lassen was one of those millions of boys who treat their teachers’ efforts as irrelevant and who tolerate confinement in the classroom only by summoning up their most cheerful good nature. Herlufsholm where he was sent at eleven is a renowned boarding school founded in 1565 and standing in a park outside Naestved some forty miles south-west of Copenhagen. A hall in memory of Lassen was endowed at Herlufsholm after the war but as Prince Georg recalls: “It was fairly well known even among non- Herlufsholmians like myself that the school had not been sorry to see Anders Lassen go for he had a cruel humour at times and had been in some scrapes.
