About the book >.>.> Angelica Kauffman (1741-1807) had an amazing career as a painter of international eminence. Born in Switzerland and at home in Rome and London where she was one of the founding members of the Royal Academy of Arts she always considered her true roots to be the Brengenzerwald of Austria. In addition to her fame as an artist she was just as known for her refined taste as a salon hostess. This monograph which accompanies two Austrian exhibitions commemorating the two-hundredth anniversary of the artist’s death is an homage to Angelica Kauffman’s life and oeuvre. Approximately 150 of her key works-including self-portraits portraits allegories historical paintings and religious motifs-are presented along with various documents. Essays by Michael Krapf Waltraud Maierhofer Tobias G. Natter Angela Rosenthal Wendy Wassyng Roworth Oscar Sandner and Helmut Swazilek examine Kauffman’s artistic development and attempt to bring together her oeuvre with her personal history and the places where she lived out her cosmopolitan life; Magdalena H?usle and Ute Pfanner offer commentaries on individual works and thematic groups. Using this approach oriented towar both art and cultural history the authors also touch on the intriguing question of the relevance of this exceptional female artist today. (OS)
