About the book >.>.> It is worthy of note that the sixteenth-century liturgical formulas of today’s “canonical” book of liturgy of the Church of England embody many ele- ments which with respect to substance as well as form are encountered in the revivalistic movements of the eighteenth nineteenth and twentieth enturies. These elements occur in a particularly concentrated form in the three principal liturgies for morning and evening prayer as well as in holy communion. The question arises: whence came these elements which are so typi- cal of the theology of the revivalistic movement as well as for their prac- tical use in evangelization meetings? Our objective then is to trace the source of these revivalistic ele- ments and to reveal how they reached The Book of Common Prayer of 1662. Accordingly we intend to present the history of the maturing of this development to its ultimate state the “canonical” prayer book of 1662. A further objective is to bring to light the prime mover in revivalistic spir- ituality namely puritanism. After a thorough analysis of the revivalistic elements in the BCP? of 1662 mention will be made of the fruit which this puritan-based revivalistic spirituality has produced. (LL)
