About the book >.>.> The exhibition “Arts in Peninsular Thailand prior to the Fourteenth Century A.D.” seeks to show in chronological sequence the millennium of artistic developments that took place in southern Thailand from the beginning of the historical period around the third cen- tury A.D. to the advent of Thai influences late in the thirteenth century A.D. The exhibition is based on a study of the arts in Peninsular Thailand conducted in conjecture with the publi- cation of the book “Thailand through Culture” which is to be published by the Bangkok Bank in 1981. The aim of this study is to trace the development of the arts as cultural expressions of the people reflecting the changes in their material and spiritual values rather than as purely aesthetic expression. Heretofore the study of the arts in Peninsular Thailand before the Thai period tended to emphasize on the attribution of works of art whose stylistic similarities relate them to known corpus of works which has been loosely classified into five groups namely: Early Objects discovered in Thailand; Dv?ravati style (6th or 7th 11th century A.D.): Ancient Hindu Images (7th 9th century A.D.) Srivijaya style (8th-13th century A.D.); and Lopburi style (7th 14th century A.D.). While such categorization serves the purpose of identification it does not take into account the complex cultural and historical frameworks within which these works were created. (MP)
