About the book >.>.> FROM the tenth to the sixth centuries BC the culture and arts of the Medes flourished in the lands of the Zagros Mountains where they had settled with Hamadan (or Ecbatana) as their capital in what today is western Iran. By the sixth century the Medes and the Persians had merged to create the great empire of the Achaemenids. During periods of invasion by the Assyrians treasures from the Median royal households would be concealed in rock caves. It was in the walls of one of these caves near Khorramabad in the Zagros area that in the 1930s Dr Benjamin Mahboubian recovered finely worked silver objects: vases and bowls of hammered silver chased and punched and ornamented with flowers; pouring vessels sprinklers and torcs decorated with animals – ibex rams’ or lion heads; rhytons incorporating rams’ heads; and goblets and ewers. These exquisite treasures are lavishly reproduced in the colour plates of this book. These works of art indicate that the Medians used simple designs combined with fine detail and elaborate workmanship to create beauty and an aura of peace. The introductory text covering the history culture and religion of the Medes provides a background to their art. (MP)
