About the book >.>.> Twenty one years have elapsed since the first and only exhibition to be devoted to the earlier artists of the Newlyn School. Since this pioneering exhibition organised by Michael Canney interest in late Victorian painting has increased greatly. The belief that an important contribution to the history of English art was made in Newlyn is now more widely accepted. Many of the artists came to Newlyn because it offered them the opportunity to work in sympathetic surroundings all the year round together with other artists who shared the same aims and ideals. Often their styles were already formed when they arrived. But they were all inspired by Newlyn. To have included works by all the artists who came to be associated with the Newlyn School and to have followed the changes of style in each artist’s work would have led to confusion. We have set out to demonstrate the scope and especially the quality of the Newlyn School during the period when the artists were a relatively coherent group enjoying shared ideals and methods. In 1935 Stanhope Forbes made a plea which I wish to endorse: ‘So year after year right up to the present day both from Newlyn and the neighbouring Art Colony of St. Ives work has emanated which has won honours and distinctions for the artists of the West Country. Is it not very regrettable that so little of this large output of art work has remained in Cornwall and especially that here in Penzance you have no…. Art Gallery not even a room in which work of local interest can be presented and shown. It is true we have in Newlyn the little Gallery which we owe to the generosity of Mr. Passmore Edwards and which we artists with the warm support of many art lovers in this district have managed to maintain successfully for many years; and that also in St. Ives our comrades there have recently founded the excellent Gallery which you doubtless know.
