About the book >.>.> It was rather due to political events than to the ineluctable geographical elements which finally drove Ascoli to establish connections positive or conflictive towards the north. Towards those spaces that is in which the proud town of Fermo the ports and markets operating on the coast the circle of small hill or lower hill towns were all to be found and all jealous of their autonomy. Starting from the Middle Ages – in part due to the common gravitation of the Via Salaria although to a greater extent the result of common attraction for papal Rome much more than for Naples directed the attention of the communities of the Tronto Basin to follow the fortunes of those others which rose more to the north. Above all as a result of the reordering carried out by Cardinal Albor- noz they all aligned themselves within the area of the so-called “dominions of the Church” whichever were their respective libertates and peculiarities of statutes and magistratures which each one conserved. Within this context also the rivalry between Ascoli and Fermo should be followed like a feud between cousins which covers a long arc of history regarding which this book lingers on various occasions and not denying that it is in its own way still alive today. The meaning should be remembered by way of example which is equally anti-Ascolian as it is anti-Anconian and anti Maceratese which the creation in the seventeenth century of a special “Congregation of Fermo” had which prescinded from the legates authority in order to place itself at the direct dependence on Rome.
