About the book >.>.> Dr. Edward J. Sullivan the guest curator of the exhibition chose to highlight one important aspect of art produced in Mexico in the 1980s. He concentrated on the analysis and presentation of the works of nine artists active in various regions of Mexico who consistently have created images exploring the self-as a personal and collective entity. The last decade has been according to the account of many scholars marked by an unprecedented artistic activity during which many talents blossomed. We welcome Dr. Sullivan’s decision to focus on a specific aspect of contemporary Mexican art rather than present a survey of trends or a sample of the many gifted artists working today in Mexico. The selected approach and the curator’s long standing scholarship on the subject allows we believe for a comprehensive presentation of the complex factors-artistic cultural social and historical-that contributed to shaping the visual language of a significant group of Mexican painters in the last decade. For the Americas Society this approach is a step toward providing the American public with the understanding that art made in Mexico (as art made in other Latin American countries) is rooted in the specific context of its cultural environment.
