The publica- tion therefore of the original manuscript of her Autobiography just as it came from her pen will be of the greatest interest to everyone. It is here being given for the first time to the English public through an admirable translation made by Monsignor Ronald Knox-in actual fact the last important work that he undertook. Till now we have been familiar with the Autobiography as edited by Mother Agnes. Mother Agnes was specially com- missioned to do this by the Saint herself and the edition thus edited was the one sanctioned for publication by the Holy See to whom both versions were submitted during the Process of Canonisation. That some editing was absolutely necessary at that time is made clear in the excellent Introduciton of Fr Fran?ois which follows this Foreword. The first part of the manuscript is full of personal family details which at that early stage would have been tedious to the public and would have obscured the message of the Saint. That Mother Agnes interpreted her commission very liberally is undoubtedly true but as Fr Fran?ois points out the portrait of the Saint and her doctrine remain in each text substantially the same.
