About the book >.>.> Bringing together documentation of early and recent works this publication is remarkably the first dedicated to the work of Fiona Banner. Although this book does illustrate much of her practice to date covering a period of almost ten years it comes at a particularly exciting and appropriate moment documenting as it does two major solo exhibitions. These distinct but connected exhibitions at Dundee Contemporary Arts and Neuer Aachener Kunstverein have been the result of an exceptional period of production one in which Banner’s complex but precise constellation of form and content media and reflexive means has developed in scope and strength. We hope that this publication conveys something of the excitement generated by the new body of work. Each of the exhibitions included Banner’s habitual forms – pencil drawing silk-screen printing and seulpture. Her hand and voice are omnipresent in these works which even when made using mass- production techniques retain a hand-made one-off quality. The exhibitions also however included a vital development of the extension into the space beyond the gallery first seen with The Nam. Installing a series of black metal full stops in the public park in which NAK is located and a revolving metal sign on the approaches to DCA’s entrance Banner has taken her work into the urban arena from which she has drawn so much material influence. The black Fullstops outdoors appeared as descendents of Henry Moore’s public works organic forms punctuating the soft contours of the park. They introduced a strange formal and textual presence to a normally easy familiar environment. (SP)
