About the book >.>.> In the slightly more than twenty years which separate us from the publication by the late Dom Gregory Dix of his paper Confirmation or Laying on of Hands? a great deal has been written on the subject of Christian initiation. Very little of it however has been concerned with the liturgical texts of the initiatory rites and certainly no comprehen- sive treatment of them has been attempted since Thompson’s The Offices of Baptism and Confirmation appeared in 1914. In the present study we shall attempt to examine one aspect of these rites the anointing with oil which accompanies baptism in all Christian liturgies from at least the third to the fifteenth centuries. Most of what has been written about the baptismal anointings has been from a theological point of view attempting to prove that the anointing either is or is not the vehicle for the gift of the Holy Spirit. We shall be concerned rather with the examination of the lex orandi itself in the firm belief that it is only by an accurate knowledge of what Christians of an earlier period did and said in the rites which they performed that we may be able to come to any conclusion regarding the meaning of these rites.
