About the book >.>.> THIS has been a most enjoyable book to write. Beads which enter into the lives of each of us at one point or another have a pleasing facility for attracting and interesting everybody. Substan- tially the same in structure they exist neverthe- less in innumerable different shapes sizes and colours and for a hundred different purposes. They can be broken but they never wear out. They are unimportant even trivial things but as Dr Joan Evans herself a needlewoman of dis- tinction has said: ‘Much of the civilization of an age can be recorded in the history of trivial things’; and from this angle archaeologists anthropologists and historians have all found them to be an invaluable source of scientific information and an abundantly rewarding field of study. But bead embroidery or more properly beads in association with textiles is a neglected and almost wholly unexplored corner of the subject and more than a quarter of a century has passed since a correspondent signing herself Aiguille sent the following letter to the editor of Notes and Queries: “From time to time there occurs a revival of interest in beadwork this usually taking the form of ladies’ evening bags.
